MP3 is MPEG layer 3 -- in other words, the audio compression scheme used
in MPEG1. M4A (and AAS) is the audio compression scheme used in MPEG4.
M4A means MPEG4 Audio. It seems to be a more efficient compression scheme.

I have seen other versions -- M4x, where x is some other letter -- that
are encrypted.
