Broadcom and some other drivers are third party. Which basically means linux developers are at the mercy of the manufacturer to distribute drivers for linux, so they are not part of the default distribution. I ran into this on my netbook I'm using Ubuntu 10.10. I plugged in an ethernet cable to my LAN port to download the drivers. Select System>Administration>Additional Drivers click activate.
