Dear All
I thought I could usefully add to this thread.
I use a Linux "LiveCD" for a number of purposes:
a) to repair Windows machines that have a problem -
i.e. repair Master Boot Record, move files from a hard drive on a
Windows machine that stopped working under Windows etc.
For instructions on how to do this see "Knoppix Hacks" - it will
work for any/most flavour of Linux (as far as I know!)
b) to use a "public computer" on which I do not want any record my
   activities (legitimate, of course!)
C) to investigate the specifications of a computer system. Yes,I
know Windows has this information but you have to delve for it!
d) to check whether a network system is valid. Windows seems to
"loose" network connections. Being able to establish that a valid
network exists makes resetting Windows more worth while.
e) Linux requires less memory than Windows so Linux will run easier on
   slower and lower specification machines.

Also:
1) There are Linux applications that will "mirror" Windows
   applications.
2) This means that both operating systems can be interchangeable
   - just about.
3) Linux is free to use. Windows costs an "arm and a leg"!
4) A "LiveCD" is simpler to use than trying to set up a "Double
   Install".

Personally, I like "PuppyLinux" because:
a) it runs completely from memory.
b) it is small sized.
c) it can save all its settings and, if necessary, any work done to
its own "LiveCD". Useful if you are hopping from one "friend's
   computer" to another.
d) It can be extended using "*.sfs" files. There is one for
   "OpenOffice" and another for "Wine".

I hope this helps anyone who wants to try out Linux Or wants to use Linux as a
tool to repair "Windows".

Best wishes
Graham
