It sounds like you did more than install a Kubuntu theme. It looks like you installed Kubuntu-desktop. That may have changed your window manager from gdm to kdm. The screen that you are talking about can be configured from the commandline or GUI. Here is a simple application to do what you want: https://launchpad.net/plymouth-manager/+download
