Yep. What the OP needs to consider is location and the environment there. Scott sees one thing in the NYC area and the story could be completely different in Portland or Seattle or Miami or Raleigh. Where I am, in the Raleigh area, most of the jobs anymore are contractor jobs and that's about you can hope for without a degree plus 10 years or more cross-discipline experience plus paper certs, and even then there's no guarantee. FWIW, I am an RHCE and former RHCX and the certification has only been a hiring factor once in the 11 years I've been in this industry. Damn. Time to fly...
