Mint is not a bad distro. I would question your data though.

1) Popular and good are not necessarily always the same thing though. 
2) Downloaded also does not equal the most popular. 
    a) A single disk can be downloaded once and then placed on hundreds of 
systems. (This happens a lot in the enterprise environment. For example my 
work's IT department offers a choice of Windows7 or Ubuntu LTS) 
    b) I know Ubuntu also mails disks and hands out thumb drive with the OS at 
libraries.
    c) The other distros have user groups that have events to load the OS on 
laptops. These wouldn't count as downloads either. 
    d) Neither does someone downloading the OS and loading it on a friends 
machine also. 
4) It is not the most popular linux distro either though, and I 
also sincerely doubt that it is the most downloaded distro. That belongs to 
Andriod. Red Hat and other server OS distros follow that, long before desktop 
distros.
