I think you need to give the installer a partition to use.

But if you didn't setup your previous system with multiple partitions then it 
might be difficult to save anything. You may have to use something like this to 
move your old files out of the way:

http://gparted.sourceforge.net/

What I do is just put my home directory on its own partition. That way if I 
ever want to reinstall I do not have to erase my personal files.
