That is one way of looking at it. More accurately 15 is SIGTERM which attempts 
to terminate a process using its normal shutdown routines. 9 is SIGKILL which 
abruptly ends the process with no graceful exit routines called. Usually if a 
process has gone off the rails you've no choice but to kill it. I don't even 
waste my time typing kill -15 anymore. I mean if the process was behaving I 
wouldn't be trying to kill it!

To make this post useful people should be aware that X Window has its own 
process killing mechanism called:

xkill

It turns your cursor into a skull and crossbones, which is pretty cool, then 
you simply click on the offending window with your Jolly Rodger cursor and end 
it.

$ man xkill
