is the motherboard finding the boot instructions?

Does anyone have a clever way of telling if the motherboard is even trying
to initialize the boot instructions on a Doc? Perhaps there exists a
little psuedo-bios that will beep at least? Although I'm pretty sure I'm
doing everything correctly now, I'm not getting so much as a peep on the
serial line or console for either the 2.2 or 2.4 kernels on my matsonic
with DoC2008 (essentially the millenium).
