I've been trolling through the ACPI stuff in 2.4.0 and it really is quite
neat -- well, amazing, actually. Basically, I see no need for my earlier
ideas about putting reset hooks into the kernel. It's there now for PIIX4,
and it will be there for other chipsets. They've done a much better job
than anything we've come up with so far.
For now, I'm going to use Ollie's powerdown and reset programs on my
boxes. I recommend the rest of you consider the same. Just put his
powerdown and reset utilities in /usr/local/bin, and use them until you
get to 2.4.0 and ACPI support. It's a quick hack to /etc/rc.d/init.d/halt.

p.s. Yes, the 2.4.0 ACPI stuff works WITHOUT any ACPI bios present.
p.p.s. I just need to learn how to use ACPI utilities.
