I can think of 3:
1. The kernel (and root) is on a vfat fs but vfat support is not compiled
into the kernel. Same for other file system mismatches.
2. Booting from an ide-hd or ide-cd is so commonplace that it is easy to
overlook needed hardware support in the kernel if you boot from some-
thing else.
3. Incompatable cpu support in the kernel. If you are using a generic 486
there should be no problem. But a pentium II or even the via offered
in the kernel menu doesn't work. (The via only works for one model via
chip).
