Yes. Back then when we chose jpeg it was because we wanted color
gradients in the splash pictures - And that completely snafus your
compression rate with gzip/bz2. Jpeg is pretty ok if you add some
algorithmical cosmetics and do 90 or 100% quality in cjpeg.
