depends on the chipset.
This chipset issue is something of a red herring. I was at office depot
and found that many of the notebooks use BX (supported) or VIA 8601
(almost working) chipsets. VAIOs use 440GX chipsets (supported). Plus,
we've also found that chipset xyz from vendor A is just about the same as
chipset xyy from vendor A. For example, lots of BX and GX code was
shareable. In other words, there is chipset variation, but not nearly as
large as you might think.
The real problem is graphics. I think the big push this year will be for
better fbdev support.
