I haven't tried (and i do have a 3c509B... that's what
you meant by 3C9058?)  but the best

Donald Becker wrote most of the NIC drivers for
linux and he made diagnostic utils to do things
including writing flash roms.  perhaps some of these
cards do passthru, but at least you have working
code to adapt to mtd drivers...Tulip chips only
map the flash for reading, to write you have to access
icky registers.

To get my ARCnet card to do this, I just soldered a
32pin socket where the 28pin was... just left off
a few wires; works great.  (of course you have to know
which wires...)
