I just tried 2.4.3 (the real thing) and it displayed the same problem. 2.4.2 and all previous kernels I have used don't seem to have this problem. Since I have not collected any information other than that the real 2.4.3 kernel has the problem, this is just an FYI. When I get a chance I will hunt down which 2.4.3-pre kernel introduced the problem. If any information about serial input on 2.4.3 kernels that comes up, I would appreciate a copy of it. Thanks!
