There is a problem I haven't mentioned yet (since I didn't fully
know it):
The flash has a 16 KB boot block. In this block there is some
recovery code, that scans the remaining 496 KB flash. It searches
for a few initialized tables from the standard bios and attempts
to calculate a checksum over the bios code. If nothing matches
(which would be the case when using linuxbios, of course), the
boot code expects a bootable floppy. On this floppy
(called crisis recovery disk in phoenix terminus) there are
the flashing program and the bios image.
Since the board is unusable if I overwrite this boot block
(I don't expect linuxbios to work for the first time) it would
be nice to keep the block. This would mean to simulate the tables
from the phoenix bios or to rewrite the boot block to not expect
these things and just boot the kernel from a specified address
(just beyond 16 KB). My favourite is the latter, since the
boot block source code is 1.2 MB and the check algorithm is not
very well documented (as far as I know).
Hope I'll know more about that in a few days...
Ciao,
Raffael
