O.k. that failed.  And now I know why linux has it's 16 bit code seperated
out nicely in an early boot section.  It is for the very pragmatic reason
that coming from a bootloader that runs under dos loading linux destroy's
dos and all TSR's.  And thus you have pointers in your interrupt table
that point to dummy code.  

So not calling the BIOS has some very practical benefits.   Back
to the drawing board...
