ok .. aside from the naming convention (which did cause me some trouble 
when I was trying to format SCSI RAID volumes under Sun's gear) ... I mean
this concept of a manipulatable device structure ... isn't that what the proc 
system does at the moment?  things like the /proc/pci .. or /proc/bus/*
