O.k. Interesting.  A couple of things.  For sheer size
you probably want to look at uclibc or dietlibc as these
are activively maintained and built to be small unlike
libc5 which has come to the end of it's development.

I don't know how well we support 2.2.x it works but there have
been occasional strange things.  With a 486 target it shouldn't
be an issue but if you could confirm the memory problem occurs
with 2.4.x we can trivially rule that problem out.  Of course
tracking why 2.2.x has problems would work too.
