One problem with many packages is that there is no reliable way to tell

        -which version it is
-what features are supported (compile option)

On system using either RPM or DEB, we can guess the version by using the
packaging system. But anyone is allowed to put a new binary in place. This
is why linuxconf can't suggest "available" maps for sendmail (Anyone has a
trick ?)
