There are two ppp configuration solution in linuxconf. One is provided by the dialout module and the other is available on redhat system, as part of the linuxconf redhat module. In the later case, there seems to be a bug for direct connect system. While you can remove the modem initialisation sequence, dial prefix and phone number, the generated chat scripts is wrong. I will have to debug that part. With the dialout module, it seems to work correctly and generate the proper script. Note that I have not tested it as I lack the proper setup (cabling) right now to try it. Please give it a try (with the dialout module) and get back. If it work, one way to get a reliable connection is to add a line like this in /etc/inittab p1:35:respawn:/bin/netconf --connect config-name --fore Could you provide the modified file you are using to get the connection working so I can make sure I am doing the right thing.
