Some versions of Linuxconf seem to have their path info to makemap
incorrect or missing. The FAQ at

   http://www.xc.org/jonathan/linuxconf-rh52-faq.html

describes the config file to check on RedHat systems to solve this:

 * Q5.4 Why do I get problems using Linuxconf to configure sendmail?

Because the provided mailconf.daemons file is bad in Linuxconf
   1.11r11. According to its author:

In linuxconf on redhat 5.1, there is a glitch. The file
     /usr/lib/linuxconf/redhat/mailconf.daemons is incomplete and
wrong. Here is the proper content

     sendmail /usr/sbin/sendmail -bd
     smrsh /usr/sbin/smrsh
     makemap /usr/bin/makemap

In Linuxconf 5.2 under Linuxconf 1.12r5 there is a similar problem.
If the above suggestion does not work, upgrade to Linuxconf 1.13r4
   or later.

If you are running a different distribution, the info will be in a
related but different config file, and makemap itself may be in a
different location on your system.

It helps us help you if you state what Linux distribution you are
running when reporting Linuxconf-related problems :-)

If you are desperate and the above config file stuff doesn't help,

    rm /etc/mail/deny.db
    touch /etc/mail/deny.db

as root may give you some (temporary?) relief.

Hoping this helps you out,

Jonathan
