Did you check that it is in fact the idle timer expiring that is
causing the disconnect? I suggest that you turn on PPP debugging and
capture daemon.* into say /var/log/daemonlog by editing
/etc/syslog.conf and restarting syslogd. Also try setting idle to 0,
which should disable the PPP idle timer completely. This is the
default anyway.
I really suspect some other cause than the idle timer. I'm not seeing
this problem here on several systems running RH 5.2 and Linuxconf
1.13r8 or r9. PPP dialout connections between systems stay up for
several hours at least, or until we choose to disconnect them. The
Linux pppd is pretty good at telling you why it does things... examine
those debug logs carefully.
