After 5 days, you care about esoteric device files! That's not
exactly the average newbie question. I've used Linux since 1993, and
I have never had to care about any of the devices you list except ippp
which is the ISDN PPP device.

No clue.

hd and then a through h are the IDE devices. hdf would be the slave
device on the third IDE controller on the system. Most normal PCs
have only two IDE controllers, so only devices hda through hdd get
used.

No idea.

No idea. This one does not exist on my RedHat 5.2 systems.

Used for ISDN connectivity using internal ISDN cards.

No idea.

No idea. Appears from its major number to be related to memory (RAM)
somehow?

You don't sound all that slow to me. My only question is why a new
Linux user would care about all these device files... :-)

Happy Christmas,
