Hi. Does anyone know how to write a custom chat script for linuxconf's
dialout module? I don't use a commercial ISP but instead dial into a terminal
server at which I have to enter a few commands before I even see a login:
prompt. I then use SLiRP to emulate the PPP connection. The standard
dialout script seems to assume that the first thing you'll see upon calling
in are the login: and password: prompts. I tried changing those to the
expected prompts from the terminal server, which works, but then dialout won't
let me send a whole string of commands in place of my login and password.
There's an entry in the "PPP and SLIP" dialogue for a custom chat script, but
I couldn't figure out how it got used. I looked through the dialout module
source, and it looks like all that custom chat script entry does is append
a string to the regular chat script, which I don't think will help me. (My C
skills are pretty weak, though, so please correct me if I'm wrong here.)

I'm running a RedHat 5.2 system. The redhatppp module works for me, since
I can enter an arbitrary list of expect/send pairs. I don't know how I can
do that with the dialout module. I would really like to use the dialout
module, though, because I really like the multiple configuration feature of
that module. I would like to be able to have several different PPP
configurations (e.g., my wife also uses the computer and makes a PPP
connection to a different machine). I think this will all work if I can
enter a set of custom expect/send pairs in the dialout module. Does anyone
here have any experience with this? Thanks very much.
