OK - this will take me a couple of days to find time.

I have experimented also: I find that once the problem arises then no
matter what version you go back to, everything will work until you
install 1.13r12-1.

If you rpm -e and then re-install any version of Linuxconf, then no
matter which working version you upgrade from, the problem appears as
soon as 1.13r12-1 is installed.

As well as the "!!" in the new password field, I have found that
1.13r12-1 does not update an existing password - everything in the
update procedure looks OK but the old password remains.

I have tried this with and without shadow passwords, plus starting with
clean password files etc.

I have found this same problem on three different machines now (all
RH5.2 with latest ERRATA loaded).


I'll let you know what I find with a clean re-install from RH5.2 CD.
