/rebuild is to rebuild the hash index and it results a partial or complete rehashing only if the hash database is damaged. If you delete the hash data files your share will obiviously completly rehashed. Both can be a clean solution, but I guess you want to rehash the smallest part as possible from that huge share. A simple upgrade might solve your problem, if not then you can still force a rebuild or a complete rehash.
