One Day
One World
----> One Operating System <----
An Army of Geeks
OK, I'm pumped on the Linux Demo day idea...think its great! And I love the OS,
no doubt about it. But does anyone else besides me have a problem with the
indicated line above from the web page? It seems to come off really M$-ish... I
think its great that Linux is really taking off, but do any of us really want to
see a world with "One Operating System" (or even one Linux distro)? Not me, even
if that OS was Linux. I think there should always be a choice of competing
products. Some people around here actually like M$ NT and believe that its a
superior product. They're using it to get their work done, and they're happy
with it. More power to them.
The great thing about linux is it appears to be the first real threat to M$. Do
I want to see M$ destroyed? Not really. But I would like to see them actually
make a decent product (last one IMHO was DOS...hey, it worked!). The fact that
Linux is primarily the work of volunteers who give their software away will
hopefully prevent it from being sucked into the vast black hole that is the
current M$ Corp. Hopefully M$ will spend their $$$ on improving their product
instead of trying to kill Linux with marketing and FUD.
Maybe I'm over-reacting here or mis-interpreting...I just think that it's really
important for us to project the right image for this thing for it to be a
success.
