Here is an extract of Bruce Perens interview I feel interesting to diffuse :
it is an aspect of Linux to be put in parallel with its importance for
democracy at large, for schools, poor countries, unfavored children,
disabled peoples...

Bruce Perens: I am somewhat down on the US educational system. As a child,
I had a neurological problem which made me speak very unclearly
till I was about eighteen. It was a form of cerebral palsy. I also moved
very awkwardly. [Oddly enough, Eric Raymond also has CP. --Editors.]
When I started first grade, the first time I opened my mouth, the teacher
took me by the hand and led me to the retarded children's class, where I
stayed until my parents realized that my description of my classmates was
a little ... unusual.
Maybe as a result of that experience, one of the common threads in my work
is learning without teachers. Kitchen-table technology, things like ham
radio and Linux, are about keeping control of technology in individuals'
hands rather than corporations. An important part of freedom is
that everyone participates in decisions that will affect their lives.
