A good run for us . We had about 12 -14 volunteers ( some could only attend
part of the demonstration ) .We got our message across very well and gathered
a great deal of attention . It helped that we were in the only mall in the city
.
This is what we learned ( note : many of these things are things that we did
well and felt were important to our success ) :

1. ) Many public locations require an insurance policy * .
2. ) Press releases should be made 3 weeks in advance .
3. ) The local press ( around here ) responded to the fact that this event was
organized exclusively over the internet .
4. ) A fully functional Dry Run of the event is a must .
5. ) # of computers/displays vs the amount of space should be low . Allow
several people to see any given demonstration easily .
6. ) Games were very attractive to the casual passerby and were convincing
arguments to the reality of Linux to many people .
7. ) Do not ignore questions because you are playing networked Quake *** .

* Many public places require an insurance policy . This amounted , for us , to
$345 . Costly . It is cheaper to get an extension of a home owners policy if
that is possible . The insurance caused us to delay our press releases until
very late .

** # of computers/displays vs the amount of space should be kept low . If a
volunteer is showing someone something on their computer then that is great !
They may also be blocking the display of another ( two people take up abit of
space ) Make sure to allot a great deal more space than you think you might
need . Keep the displays open to passerby's .

*** I didn't do this but darned if I wasn't tempted .

> All in all, we learned a few things, such as:
> -pick a place with better traffic flow
> -give more advance notice to place of demo
> -advertise more, perhaps a blurb in local papers
> -be prepared... bring every distro CD you have, you never know
>
> If anyone has questions regarding our demo, please feel free to post them.
