I was part of a two-member team who presented a paper on "Network
Security" during an inter-college paper presentation contest around March
of this year. I still remember some (or most) of the public key
cryptography theory/principle, but nothing Linux specific.
Userid authentication on websites depends on scripting or apache (or
whatever) being tweaked by a .htaccess file.

Okay. I nominate sendmail (can't do without it, can we? it's almost a base
package) and fetchmail. named, pppd, minicom, lynx, wget, ncftp, irc epic
(get a real irc client!!), mysqld (or postgresql or both), more games,
music payers (mp3, ra (if any), wav, midi, mod, etc)....
(dunno the package names for most of those)
