check the last sections of the XF86config file in /etc/X11/
if the available resolutions and the specified resolutions are same then
there is not virtual screen ...

Obviously it has gone into suspend mode .. not standby ..
Monitor on =====> dozing .. ====> standby (blinking lights) =======> Yawn
... ===> suspend .. shut down and supply power to all vital compenents ..
even the major components of the system shut down ... including the disks
and part of the cpu .. only the memory has some power to retain the existng
state of the O.S
