var CC = Cybercafe;
Okay, just checked on freshmeat my results:
There's maybe a million chat clients out there (okay, maybe 900,000).
Everyone is going to have to pool in with their favourites so we can
decide which ones can go into a CC.
Yahoo pager: There is a Linux version, so we could use that. There's
also a few 100 clones, so someone please volunteer to benchmark these.
AOL instant messenger: Again, there is a Linux version. The protocol is
also open source, so we could hack that maybe. Need volunteers to
benchmark here too.
ICQ: gazillion clones both text mode as well as X based. volunteers
needed here too.
MSN messenger: nothing turned up yet. Maybe I can hack it, but I've got
to go back to work first.
This is what I think:
Since we will be keeping this Sunday's meet specially for (but not
restricted to) persons with experience, the other's could help out by
downloading a few of these clients and testing them.
What we need to test:
- How well they compare against the windoze versions.
- What features make it better (apart from running on linux)
- Do they have proxy support
- What kind of proxy support do they have - http only, socks, udp etc
- Ease of use
- Customisation options
All these tests will have to be documented so that we can include it in
our documentation that we will be distributing.
Now's your chance to volunteer for something useful.
Any other suggestions can be run on this thread. I will summarise all
comments soon.
