in conf.modules don't use lp =
instead add a line

alias parport_pc parport_lowlevel

then use printtool from X

Subject: [ILUG-BOM] HELP SOS: Parallel port not detected.

| Hi all,
|
| Got a curious prob.
| My Parallel port is not detected in linux.
|
| /proc/devices : does not show up.
| /dev/ .. lp0,lp1,lp2  .. not present.
|
|
| in conf.modules... tried..
|
| lp=0x278...  etc....
|     { also tried .. paride, parport .. }
|
| while booting...
|  ' unkown keyword lp '
|
| tried 'make menuconfig & xmenuconfig' to recompile the kernel.
|
| in the menu.... even though I should be able to compile it into the
| kernel... option "y" is disabled for everything related to parallel ports
/
| parallel printers. ( help says ... option 'y' is available )
|
| I have used this very printer (HP-DJ200 )in older versions of RHL (5, 5.1,
| 5.2 etc.. )
| (printer/port works fine in the other OS)
|
| I am using RHL 6.1 from Pc-Quest.
|
| I recomplied the kernel using all options related to parallel ports as
| "m"... ( loadable module - kernel 2.2.12-20 ).
|
| No effect. { :-) .. though my system is a lot faster... left out all the
| unreq. details ... }
| Any Ideas ???
| { yeah.. yeah... I know .. switch to SUSE .. but I do not believe that
this
| prob. is specific to RHL. }
|
| Anybody having same prob.? I am relatively exp. in installing... & this is
| the first time I've got this error. ( I know the install is OK )
|
| HELP!!!!!
