Yeah.. I'm in deep deep trouble after using /var/spool/mail at all my
servers and using IMAP for transport. My HDD light never goes off.
Maildirs would reduce load tremendously. Also check out the Courier IMAP
server, which is Maildir-only and lightweight. Find it at Freshmeat.
