We already have the knowhow for this (diskless booting) Philip....but i am
very *poor* when it comes to marketing...
I have already setup a lab of diskless machines at my college (20-25 m/c)
about 2 years back...it still works well !!!

Can we have it on the 30th, my exams are on the 23rd so I can't make it
then. A few other things I would like to try out with this kind of setup:
- Run some scientific applications that would normally require a pentium
200 under windows.
- Install a database (mysql?) on the server and use the diskless machines
as clients.
- Standard office applications (staroffice?) that we would probably be
doing anyway.
The reason I want to do this is that one of my professors at Xavier's
complained that there weren't enough scientific applications out there
that are easily available to colleges. Most colleges can't (or won't) pay
for expensive sc apps.
Secondly, Xavier's has also partially computerised their library. If we
can run a database client on the diskless m/cs then we can put a library
cataloguing system at least on them (I have written one such app for
windows, but am not very willing to give it away free)
Third, if they had 3 486 machines at different points, this would probably
cost the same as one pentium II. The machines can be used for research by
students and faculty alike, while the faculty can build their reports and
tests on the machine (currently all class test question papers are hand
written which isn't exactly easy to read)
If we can get this to work, we could convince a lot of colleges to go in
for it.
