Hi Guys,
I require suggestions on holding a workshop on linux. Nagarjuna and I
have discussed this a bit and following is what we hit on:
* Hold a lecture series over maybe two days covering different topics.
These lectures could be open to all and would include:
- Linux installation
- Difference between linux and GNU
- security
- mail setup
- other daemon setup (httpd, ftpd would have lowest precedence)
- Alt Applications (Zope, Qmail, Staroffice, mysql)
- Development tools (gcc, gdb, perl, gtk, tcl, python etc.)
* Hold a one day workshop for a limited number of people covering:
- Installation of some distro.
- Steps involved in compiling the kernel (my reasons for this later)
- Allow the participants in the workshop to configure mail, httpd and
other small utils on the system.
- Install mysql (optional)
* Maybe provide them with documentation from the LDP. For this, we could
either install the info on the distro, or burn it onto a CD in html/text
format.
This workshop (if we go through with this) will be held for engineering
students (mainly comp engg) at my college. They have all been programming
for a while, but only under a DOS environment. This kind of a workshop
would help them.
Why I wanted to have kernel compilation as part of the workshop:
All branches of computer science in our college have a course on Operating
Systems. However, even after going through this course, not many students
know how an OS is built, how it gets on to the harddisk and how the system
boots with it.
I hope that by going through the steps of compiling the kernel, we can
explain how a kernel is built, how the boot image is created, and how it
gets onto the mbr. In this case we would talk about lilo as well as
dd'ing the image to a floppy diskette (make zdisk?).
Now I need your input on these things.
- Does anyone have suggestions for other topics we should cover. If so,
should it be a lecture or part of the workshop. We should limit what is
done during the workshop so that it can be done thoroughly.
- Is anyone willing to volunteer their time to take a lecture on one of
the topics.
- Any other helpful/critical suggestions
Also, any of you in college can take a survey in your own college to find
out how popular linux is and how many people would attend such a session.
Act soon as I would like to hold this thing by the end of Feb or early
March.
Philip
