That makes sense, since the outside is more likely to get damaged than the
inside.  I just analogised with LPs.

BTW, have any of you seen a CD under a polarising microscope at 100x
magnigication?  I have - as part of a physics assignment in SYBSc.  It is
an excellent sight.  The pits and lands are just a few microns apart, and
the difference in reflection causes interference in the polarised light to
give out great colours.  It's not something that can be described.
