There'll be a bunch to gcc versions on your system. Check with
$  ls /usr/bin/gcc*

/usr/bin/gcc is just is link to one of these.
Try changing the gcc used from gcc-3.x to gcc-4.x (or vice-versa) as follows:
$  export CC=/usr/bin/gcc-xx

Then try compiling. You might need to change g++ also:
$  export CXX=/usr/bin/g++-xx
