hmmm... use root instead of a privileged account. If you are using root, the BDB tables where rpm stores package information is not being updated. Use rpm with initdb or rebuilddb switches :). Again, try making rpm puke out a more verbose output so that you can see what is going wrong. The switch for this is -v.
