hmmm... use root instead of a privileged account. If you are using 
root, the BDB tables where rpm stores package information is not 
being updated. Use rpm with initdb or rebuilddb switches :).

Again, try making rpm puke out a more verbose output so that you 
can see what is going wrong. The switch for this is -v. You can 
try -vv too :).

I find this is normal if you are not using Linux with comaptible 
hardare. Otherwise get your hardware especially memory SIMMS 
checked.
