Ok now regarding your query, Cable modem doesnt need a driver (if you not planning to use it over USB ..) most of the time its connected via straight UTP cable on to your Ethernet card. So have that things checked with your provider thats it, and then you can refer to one of those Transparent Proxy HOWTO using squid + iptables and you can share your internet connection.
