Gnome 2.2 has Xft2 (I think) and has very AA'ed fonts. I dont use Gnome, but, so take that with a pinch of salt. What I did observe was that fonts *did* look very rough when I was using Sawfish with X. But IceWM with X seems to not have that problem.
