chokes = what ?
could you give the error msg ?
its quite unlikely that you can boot a rh kernel on a suse and vice-versa.
Assuming you haven't done that, did you have reiserfs on your rh system ? if not the 
reiserfs tools and module haven't been installed on ur rh box.
where exactly have you traced the problem to ? grub or the fstab ?
