Is this only for the local user or the root as well ? What does kdm.conf say ?
Login fails for root and local user both. I didn't find kdm.conf. But /etc/kde3/kdm/kdm.options has the following lines:
no-ignore-nologin
no-restart-upgrade
use-sessreg
Googling has shown that what happened is KDM actually restarts X, but no solution was offered.
