Just crosscheck first if your passwd is correct. Try changing it and
retry. If it is a user passwd, in your /etc/passwd file, login as root
and edit the line corresponding to the username and delete the 'x' in
the second field.
eg. user_name:x:uid:gid:.....
Then you can login as that user without passwd and create a new passwd.
If its a root passwd, boot up the system in single user mode and do the
same procedure for the line corresponding to root. Then set a new passwd. :)
