FSSG, HUST

FSSG, HUST was founded by Hong Feng on Dec 20, 2004. Currently there are 30+
members in the group. On Dec 20, 2004, Hong Feng gave a speech to the HUST
students, on the topic "What is a Hacker?". The students in HUST, as in
other most Chinese univerisities today, learn the Windows based tools, which
Hong pointed out, it is little helpful to grasp the nature of computing
science. Anyone who needs to master computer science, has to hack the source
code. Free software, comes out with fully complete source codes, provide the
possibility for the students to understand the nature of the computing, thus
it is the best choice for the students to become professional software
engineers, or hackers.

Hong emphasized the importance of learning Scheme, as it is the most
powerful programming language today. The purple bible "Structure and
Interpretation of Computer Programs" (the introductory textbook in MIT) is
highly recommended as the textbook for the audience to study closely. Scheme
is powerful, because it handle the symbolic expressions, which may refer
anything in the computer. Scheme is strong to express the algorithms, which
can liberate the programmers from the memory allocations, where many details
are related wit the hardware.

For the students who need to construct the "bricks" of computing, C or
assembly is required to study. Hong introduced how to study "3+3" with free
software, i.e. the 3 platforms: the OS (GNU or FreeBSD), the network, and
the database management platform; and the 3 programming languages: Scheme, C
and assembly. All these knowledges can be obtained on the free software
platform, and the students can develop the programming talent by hacking
them.

More than 200 students joined the speech in the classroom. Most of them are
the freshmen in the HUST, who study the computer science, some are the
graduate students. After the speech, Hong spent about 40 minutes, answered
the questions from the audiences, which covered from the trends in the
current software industry, the concrete programming problems, how Indian and
European students learn the programming through the free software resources,
to how to grow the free software business if the student lives on it.

Hackerdom Training Program (HTP) is an advanced training system developed by
Hong Feng based on the Pansystems methodology, which enables a student can
become a true hacker within relative short time. Hong also introduced this
tempting training system.

The free software study group, as a small community in the campus, is a nice
way to gather the students with the same interest on programming, the
members in the group can discuss the problem encountered in the learning and
the hacking, by exchanging the experience, the members in the group can
share more experience than the ones who are not in the group.

After the speech, about 30 students decided to join the FSSG, HUST, and they
held the first meeting, and elected the group leader and the secretary.
HUST's facility is pretty good, and much better than 4 years ago, the
students can all get online, so to share the hacking experience would be
easy.

The FSSG, HUST is the first one Hong established in the Chinese university,
Hong planned to establish 100 such groups in Chinese universities step by
step, and connect these free software study groups together. RONSNET offers
the guidance to these groups for the further hacking. The guide also
includes the CD-ROMs, academic journals, software magazines, the T-shirts
with free software logos, and other materials.
