We are still trying to help... I can't help much without seeing what the failure is. If timestamping.c is working that's possibly a good indication.
However, timestamping.c uses ptp v1 packets, which are not used by ptp4l. However software timestamping shouldn't care about this. You are incorrect regarding software timestamps, as you actually need a one line change to the MAC driver to support software timestamps. Receive timestamps don't require a driver change. One thing you could do is attach a copy of the output from a failed run of ptp4l.
