Mac,

I have just begun having the same problem with mine (R3306 with
Toshiba SD-R2512 cdrw/dvd-rom). In windoze I get the same error ("The
device, \Device\CdRom1, has a bad block.") and in Linux I get IO
errors and not ready errors and /dev/dvd isn't available. I have also
been unable to boot from cds or dvds (except knoppix std, DSL linux
which is about 50 MB in size and windoze install cds).

I have been able to copy cds into iso images without problems, but
burning cds or playing dvds won't work in linux or windoze. Nero
doesn't even recognize the drive and cdrecord fails in linux. I got
an "improper alignment" error out of windoze, and an unknown error
from cdrecord (425?)

I've decided it's a hardware problem and I'm sending it off to HP for
repair (happily, my warranty isn't up yet).

John
