Hello,
With the recent flurry of postings about suspend, which raised my
hopes, I observed a recurring theme: posters failed to mention whether
they used a 32-bit or a 64-bit kernel. Although some may question the
wisdom of using a 64-bit kernel (and I personally have been pulling my
hair off to avoid having 32-bit sound applications "monopolizing" the
sound card), there are many good reasons to use one, such as scientific
computing.
I would also like to raise some questions about the use of kernel
2.6.14. I am running 64-bit SuSE 10 with kernel 2.6.13. When I updated
to 2.6.14, my 'iptables' broke (and how can I run a firewall without
'iptables'?). I also had mysterious 'traceroute' jobs sapping all
processor power (which I noticed only because the fans started running
at full speed and subsequent 'powersave -rT' revealed that the processor
was running "pedal to the metal"). Expterts on the SuSE 64-bit board
told me that these problems were due to the 64-bit 2.6.14 kernel I was
using; these problems disappeared after I switched back to 2.6.13
(64-bit), so the experts were probably right. I am not sure if this
issue concerns only the "SuSEfied" 64-bit kernels, but I thought I
should mention it to warn others.
