Hi, Håkan.
Thank you for responding.
I will call HP alright. The part I am looking for probably costs less
than 1¢ to make. In fact, I transferred the undelying plastic mechanism
from the scroll/ num lk key to the delete key (where the trouble
occurred initially) because I use the delete key a lot and hardly ever
use the other key.
Last June the left ctrl key became partially unseated, but I fixed the
problem myself. If I were to send this machine back to HP for repairs,
it would be the sixth time I send a Presario R3000Z back to HP for
repairs (but the first time this laptop) because my first R3000Z laptop
was an absolute lemon. To their credit, HP worked out the details with
hpshopping.com (from where I ordered my original R3000Z in Sept. 2004;
it is really a bank and separate from HP) to extend the interest-free
payment terms to the date they shipped me a this functioning laptop.
Very nice of them.

I had the same problem, the "S" key on my keyboard broke and wouldn't
be seated again. It was still under warrant (the last month of it!). A
quick call to HP and a new keyboard was on its way. When the keyboard
was delayed they called me and let me know it would take a day or two
longer than expected.
I had to replace it myself - I believe the nx9105 vs r3000 vs zv5000
warranties differ here - but that was no biggie. I had a tech on the
phone just in case I'd get into trouble but it was easy once I had
located all the screws. They required me to send the old keyboard
back, but I don't collect broken junk so I'm fine with that.
Even if your computer is not under warranty it doesn't hurt to make
the call. At least here in Sweden HP have been very helpful and they
haven't acted like that monster of bureaucracy that they seem to do
sometimes.

Hi,
In my infinite wisdom and dexterity I managed to destroy one key of my
R3000 keyboard. Namely, one of the tabs of the white plastic
criss-crossed mechanism, which binds the top of the key to the three
latches on the base of the keyboard, broke off. Would anybody know
where I can find a replacement? I suspect a part like this is made by
the billions and would cost pennies if it can be found. TIA.

PS. At least now I know how I can upgrade the memory to 2GB!
